Privacy
Reading a page here leaves one line in a server log, and that line expires.
Pages
Every page is a static HTML file, built ahead of time and served unchanged to whoever asks for it. Cookies are not used. Neither are analytics, visitor counters or ad code, and there are no scripts of any kind. The stylesheet and everything else a page needs are served from this domain, so opening a page sends no request to anyone else. There are no accounts, comment threads or forms.
Server logs
The site runs on nginx. Like most web servers, it notes each request in an access log: which IP address asked, when, for which page, what status and how many bytes went back, the referrer if the browser passed one along, and whatever the browser says about itself in its user-agent header. A failed request may also add a line, IP address included, to an error log. The logs rotate every day and each file is deleted once it is fourteen days old. They are read only when something breaks or when the server is being abused, and they are never combined with other data, sold or shared.
A message sent to the editor address is used to reply to it and for no other purpose. The address it came from is not put on a mailing list or given to anyone. Ask, and the correspondence will be deleted.
Requests
Since the site keeps no profiles, there is very little it could hold about any one reader: a fortnight of log entries at the outside, plus any email that reader has sent. A request to see or remove either can go to editor@startupquote.com, and it is honored wherever the reader lives.
